Box-inequalities for quadratic assignment polytopes

چکیده
Linear Programming based lower bounds have been considered both for the general as well as for the symmetric quadratic assignment problem several times in the recent years. Their quality has turned out to be quite good in practice. Investigations of the polytopes underlying the corresponding integer linear programming formulations (the non-symmetric and the symmetric quadratic assignment polytope) have been started during the last decade [34, 31,21,22]. They have lead to basic knowledge on these polytopes concerning questions like their dimensions, affine hulls, and trivial facets. However, no large class of (facet-defining) inequalities that could be used in cutting plane procedures had been found. We present in this paper the first such class of inequalities, the box inequalities, which have an interesting origin in some well-known hypermetric inequalities for the cut polytope. Computational experiments with a cutting plane algorithm based on these inequalities show that they are very useful with respect to the goal of solving quadratic assignment problems to optimality or to compute tight lower bounds. The most effective ones among the new inequalities turn out to be indeed facet-defining for both the non-symmetric as well as for the symmetric quadratic assignment polytope.

Polyhedral Combinatorics of Qaps with Less Objects than Locations (extended Abstract)
For the classical quadratic assignment problem (QAP), where n objects have to be assigned to n locations (the n n-case), polyhedral studies have been started in the very recent years by several authors. In this paper, we investigate the variant of the QAP, where the number of locations may exceed the number of objects (the m n-case). It turns out that the polytopes that are associated with this...
متن کاملA new separation algorithm for the Boolean quadric and cut polytopes
A separation algorithm is a procedure for generating cutting planes. Up to now, only a few polynomial-time separation algorithms were known for the Boolean quadric and cut polytopes. These polytopes arise in connection with zero-one quadratic programming and the maxcut problem, respectively. We present a new algorithm, which separates over a class of valid inequalities that includes all odd bic...
متن کاملA special place of Boolean quadratic polytopes among other combinatorial polytopes
We consider several families of combinatorial polytopes associated with the following NP-complete problems: maximum cut, Boolean quadratic programming, quadratic linear ordering, quadratic assignment, set partition, set packing, stable set, 3-assignment. For comparing two families of polytopes we use the following method. We say that a family P is affinely reduced to a family Q if for every pol...
متن کاملSpeeding up IP-based algorithms for constrained quadratic 0-1 optimization
In many practical applications, the task is to optimize a non-linear objective function over the vertices of a well-studied polytope as, e.g., the matching polytope or the travelling salesman polytope (TSP). Prominent examples are the quadratic assignment problem and the quadratic knapsack problem; further applications occur in various areas such as production planning or automatic graph drawin...
متن کاملAffine maps between quadratic assignment polytopes and subgraph isomorphism polytopes
We consider two polytopes. The quadratic assignment polytope QAP(n) is the convex hull of the set of tensors x⊗x, x ∈ Pn, where Pn is the set of n×n permutation matrices. The second polytope is defined as follows. For every permutation of vertices of the complete graph Kn we consider appropriate (n 2 ) × (n 2 ) permutation matrix of the edges of Kn. The Young polytope P ((n − 2, 2)) is the conv...
